Tips we swear by to increase productivity

Ah! Productivity, the la la land of all workaholics! The dopamine we all crave to achieve, a reward for being productive. Well, there’s no rigid manual or guideline that sticks to everyone and promises to derive results, but hey, we do have some productivity mantras unique to the ever-changing moods and seasons of life!

The never-ending to-do lists, mugs and mugs of favorite beverages, crumpled ideas, finished diaries, lengthy brainstorming sessions, and surprise snack cravings, are a few of the many behind-the-scenarios of finally breathing a sense of relief after getting things done! So much for that satisfying strike of completing something. Let’s cut short the drama and come straight to the point - We All Love Being Productive! But we never seem to get rid of the desire to increase productivity, achieve more, be motivated, amplify positivity, and alas, get that extra dose of dopamine.

Before we discuss some tips to boost productivity, it’s important to note that creative blocks, demotivation, stormy days, and days where you can’t accomplish everything on your list, are simply normal and inevitable. So, keeping the idea of mystical perfectionism at bay is the very first tip we swear by. Aiming for perfectionism is superb, but it can at times backfire in a way that can hold you back from even kick-starting the work in your hand. Instead, focus on giving your best and perfection will follow!

This might seem contradictory to the popular notion that “You get more things done when you multitask”, but hear us out, giving 100% at one single task can be more effective and impactful than scattering your 20% on 5 different things. Having said that, distractions aren’t really in our control. According to research, it approximately takes 23 minutes to regain focus on the task at hand. Be mindful of what gets your attention, limit distractions in possible ways, and prioritize what really needs your time and energy.

We believe in breaks! Be it a coffee/tea break or a simple chat with a colleague, breaks can do wonders for your productivity by giving you a breather. The constant bombardment of information, pondering for ideas, and being immersed in the work world can take a toll on creativity. There are various techniques such as Pomodoro where you take a 5-minute break every 25 minutes. Another interesting technique is getting your toughest task done first thing. This is also known as the ‘Eat The Frog’ technique, which is metaphorical to accomplishing something that you dread so that the rest of the day seems easier. “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” -Mark Twain. The refreshed perspective you have while you are starting something new right at the start of the day can play a huge role in being productive and not drain you of your mental and creative energy.

How can we spark the topic of productivity and not talk about coffee? A beverage that helps you focus, brews ideas and saves you from lethargy. It’s a special productivity potion we swear by.

We all have a brainstorming space, just a simple change of scenery that enables you to let go of the block and think freely. It’s surprising how a bit of space change can elevate the free flow of creative thoughts. Have you heard of Parkinson's law? Here’s what it basically means - The idea that work expands to fill the time allotted for its completion. Instead of thinking about how much time you have, think of how much time you really. need! This will not only help save some extra time but also enhance your focus and lift off the pressure of deadlines. Trust us, work is always going to be effective when you put energy into the quality of work you are delivering instead of focusing on the deadlines.

To sum it all up and collect the seashells of productivity tips, here’s a list that can come in quite handy. (ya, ya, we know we love lists.)

Give your best without making perfectionism your sole focus.
